Document design is extremely valuable for Technical Communicators. Whether creating new web content, creating flyers and forms, or formatting massive documents, having experience in design is imperative.
For a year while at Portland State, I worked to Willamette Cultural Resources CRA as a Technical Editor. I took Archaeologists large reports and formatted them using the Society of American Archaeology style guide. I designed the documents using MS Word and edited large tables in MS Excel. All the documents went through editing via Dropbox and track changes.
While at PSU, I also took quite a few InDesign courses that developed my skills in graphic design. I took a six page document full of short stories I wrote during undergrad at Chapman University and designed the layout using InDesign and Illustrator.
